Latest report on education published by Eurydice

Eurydice published its latest report on Key Data on Education, regarding the main developments of European education systems over the last decade. The report aims at describing the organisation, management and functioning of 37 European (EU, EFTA, Croatia and Turkey) education systems, from pre-primary to tertiary education.

More specifically, the report addressed the following issues: Demographic Context, Educational Structures, Participation, Resources, Teachers and Management staff, Educational Processes and Qualification Levels and Transition to Employment.

The main results show a great increase in the number of persons concerned with education, with most countries having extended the number of compulsory years of education. Although it showed some efforts to ameliorate the educational systems, it also identified an issue, which could be of further concern in future: the lack of qualified teachers in some core subjects.

To read the report, please
.

The European Commission launched very recently a new campaign, called “We Mean Business”, aiming at encouraging companies to create more placements for trainees. The goal the Commission wants to reach by this initiative is to boost young people’s skills and employability. But it will also, in the meantime, help companies. Not only will they be made aware of the opportunity to engage young people as trainees, but also will they benefit from this intercultural exchange, as well as the opportunity to discover potential future for qualified employees. This campaign is part of the “Youth Opportunities Initiative”, unveiled in December 2011 in order to drive down as soon as possible the worrying high level of youth unemployment.

To read more about the campaign, please
.

Expert interviews about Teacher training in the age of Web 2.0 have been realized after the Lyon Webinar "Teacher training in the age of Web 2.0: The current situation & future perspectives". This expert video explores poignant insights and thoughtful opinions from three leading professionals on social media in the field of language teaching and teacher training. Last but not least, LS6 was offered the opportunity to disseminate its innovative approach and ongoing work in the field of language learning at a workshop the European Commission had organized at the Expolangues 2012, which took place from February, 1st to 4th in Paris/France.The presentation among selected three EU projects took place on the 2nd day of the Expolangues. LS6 presented a short introduction, gave insight into the pedagogical approach and methodologies applied as well as an overview over results, outcome and impact, before concluding its exchange with the enthusiastic language fair public in a session of questions and answers. Moreover, beyond the workshop contribution, the LS6 project was also presented at the official EC stand during all four days of the fair and initiated interactive activities concerning language learning and social media. The idea behind this is to invite expo visitors and interested volunteers to share their thoughts, stories and testimonies about meaningful language learning processes and social media (as promoted within the LS6 project). A live blog was dedicated to this purpose and has seen a great success in the Expolangues 2012.

In the first half of 2012, Denmark will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU. The programme for the Danish presidency entitled “Europe at work” outlines the four fundamental priorities for the presidency which are: a responsible Europe, a dynamic Europe, a green Europe and a safe Europe.
Following this the Presidency will give priority to the work on the Commission proposal for the new generation of support programmes in the areas of education, youth, culture, media and sport. Of key importance is strengthening of vocational education and training among young people and adults with the focus on establishing closer links to the labour market. In the area of youth the Danish Presidency will deal with the question of active participation in society of young people. High priority is given on the promotion of creativity, innovation performance and talent among young people as part of their active citizenship and transition to employment. This will be of key importance, especially in the light of the importance of improving young people’s employment opportunities at the present time with high youth unemployment rates in Europe.

This Eurobarometer survey has collected the opinion of European citizens about vocational education and training (VET) in 2011 to help inform the work of the European Commission before starting to implement the new VET strategy. In the course of the survey, 26.840 European citizens were interviewed. It gathered people’s impression on VET’s potential benefits within the EU and it evaluated the impact of VET on society and on the economy.

No stigma is attached to vocational training as an alternative to academic studies, with 71% of all European respondents seeing VET as a positive image in their country. However, a fifth of all the EU respondents believe that VET does not offer good career opportunities, and this is the main area which the EU initiative must improve by 2020.

To read all the statistics, please
.

It is coordinated by COOSS Marche (IT), in partnership with the University of Urbino (IT), Baobab (ES), CEFERH (FR), TP-Theatre (SE) and the Y.E.S. Forum. ATTEMPT intends to experiment innovative communication practices between parents and primary school teachers (working with 12-14 years aged students), to help them to develop coping and empowering strategies allowing them to better face bullying situations and effectively support their children/students.
The focus of the 2nd partner meeting was to exchange knowledge of possible attractive techniques partners are experienced in. In this regard, the Swedish partner TP-Teatern organised a life demonstration of the Interactive Form Theatre (IFT) method, to show the project partners how it works.
